Located in the great palace of Brera, which also houses other institutions including the National Library Braidense, the Accademy of Fines Arts and the Astronomical Observatory. The Art Gallery occupies the top floor of the large building, but is waiting to expand in nearby Palazzo Citterio. The fame of the Pinacoteca is due to large canvases by Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia Romagna schools as well as masterpieces by Piero della Francesca, Giovanni Bellini, Mantegna, Raphael, Tintoretto and Caravaggio. The area surrounding the Pinacoteca di Brera with the magnificent Church of San Marco (short visit inside at the beginning of the tour) is one of the oldest areas of town, today one of the most distinctive and fascinating.
