Residencia Argonauta

Located in the delightful village of Fajã Grande at Europe’s westernmost point, Argonauta is surrounded by a paradise of natural beauty and tranquillity. The owner of this delightful house is a resident Italian who is a photographer and island enthusiast. The house has a bohemian and homely feel with original floral frescos from the 1930’s on the walls and woodwork from a vessel shipwrecked off Flores’ western reefs.

There is a guest lounge on the first floor with TV, CD player, library and internet access. Delicious evening meals on request though please note they are expensive compared to local restaurants. The location of Argonauta is wonderful, just a short walk from the port and swimming area and there are some great rock pools close by. Walking to the North and South of Fajã Grande is spectacular.

Courelas: means “little property of land” and it is also the name of a part of Fajã Grande consisting of about 20 houses and dark stone barns, crossed by a narrow street of the same name which is overlooked by the bedroom window. The Patio bedroom is so named because it has direct access to the Argonauta patio by way of a stone staircase beyond a little hall which also gives access to the bathroom with basalt detailing. Cosy Patio bedroom, second best room in the hierarchy of the house, features a wardrobe, a sofa, a writing desk, a rocking chair and a built in cupboard with a 1929 frame. The Suite 2000 offers unique features within its unusual one bedroom apartment layout: independent access from the outside world by way of a stone staircase which goes on to the common pátio, where you can relax outdoor; the connection to the rest of the house is near the Living Room. There’s a comfortable 140×200 double bed with organic latex mattress and a 3rd person can be accomodated in the sofa bed. The suite has a wardrobe, a kitchenette with small stove/oven and kitchen utensils, a cupboard, a sink, and table. The guest can also enjoy a traditional woodfire oven with chimney and wood, and an old kitchen iron plate which can be used as a fireplace. The bathroom with its large double bath (1,90×0,90m.) is a mark in local history as it was the first bathroom in the village of Fajã Grande, built in 1929 by Lucindo de Freitas! Nororeste: This bedroom has two large skylights (Velux) which open toward the islet of Monchique to the north and share another view over the mountains and waterfalls to the east. Furthermore, the suite has a little terrace facing the west which provides a beautiful view of the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean. This huge room (30 sq. metres) and its twin the Southwest Suite represent the best of Argonauta’s offering, featuring a pedestal fan, a music player, an electric keyboard, historic books, a relaxing sofa-bed, tables and chairs. The bathroom has a shower, bidet, and details in basalt and the wardrobe is illuminated by natural light from the inside. The new bed was made in Flores with local timber and topped with a wide latex mattress (160x200cm) which ensures perfect comfort for even the most discerning guest.
