PALERMO, Founded by the Phoenicians, Palermo was developed by the Arabs, then Normans, as well as Hohenstaufens: all periods in which
its most prestigious monuments were built. Along the oldest streets are splendid patrician mansions and monuments: the Royal Palace with its Chapel, the Cathedral, the “Martorana”church, Piazza Pretoria and Palazzo Steri. Also of great interest are Monreale, with its magnificent Cathedral and annexed cloister; Bagheria, rich in prestigious patrician dwellings from the eighteenth century; Mondello, a popular bathing resort and Ustica, the paradise of scuba divers; Caccamo, with the grandiose medieval castle looming over it, and Cefalù, with its ancient cathedral set in an historic town centre by the sea.
