Here we are in the southern Murge area, only 4kms from the town of Alberobello, famous for its unusual cone-shaped stone dwellings or ´trulli´. This is a typical southern farm built entirely of white stone, irregularly shaped, whose nucleus and outbuildings, once the centre of farming activities, now house part of the guest accommodation; the restaurant, guest rooms, wood-fired oven and wine cellar. All the buildings face onto the large square, once the busy centre of farm life. The building (Masseria) itself is extremely old: around the 16th century it was a monastery. The residing monks devised an overflow irrigation system for their fields collecting rain water in enormous circular basins called ´pile´, the origin of this valley´s name. The view from the swimming pool (16 x 16 m. - open May/Sept.) stretches endlessly over the 52 hectares of gentle hills, dark brown with splashes of red earth. Here the typical ´fico d´India´ (prickly pear) grows spontaneously, symbol of an untamed nature which has bestowed centuries of life to the magnificent olive trees.
